Tradition revived for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
A KINROSS-SHIRE community is to revive a long-lost local tradition in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The village of Milnathort is to hold a children’s fancy dress parade through its streets on June 2, evoking memories of an event last seen at least 20 years ago.
The parade will start at Milnathort Primary School at noon and make its way through the village led by a rickshaw and accompanied by Kinross Pipe Band before returning to the school for the official opening of Milnathort’s annual summer fête, where judging will take place.
There’ll be prizes for the best Jubilee-themed costume and every child will receive a memento of the occasion.
The fancy dress parade will kick off a week of creativity in Milnathort as residents prepare for the village’s first-ever scarecrow festival to commemorate the Olympic torch relay, which passes through on June 13.
They’ll be decorating their windows and adorning their gardens with sports-themed scarecrows as well as taking them along to line the route when the relay arrives at 8am.
Lynne Bennet of Milnathort Community Council, who are organising both events, said: “Many older residents have very fond memories of the children’s fancy dress parade, which was a highlight of Milnathort’s calendar for many years.
“The Jubilee seemed like a perfect opportunity to revive it.”
