THE long-delayed trial of Fife’s former Chief Constable finally got underway in Kirkcaldy yesterday (Wednesday).

Norma Graham, who retired from her £120,000 a year post in August last year, faces a charge of careless driving over an accident which left Hannah Shedden badly hurt.

On the first day of the trial, at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, physiotherapist Miss Shedden described how she had left her home on the morning of February 7 last year to drive to work.

Seconds after leaving, she said, she saw Graham’s dark blue Audi coming towards her silver Renault Clio, travelling on the wrong side of the road, before the collision happened.

Describing the aftermath, Miss Shedden added: “I broke my collar bone and had to have surgery on my left knee.

“I was in hospital for three days and I’ve been left with a scar on my left knee and the implications of having broken my collar bone and the surgery.

“I was off work for four months.”

Collision investigators from Fife Constabulary and Lothian and Borders Police confirmed the road was damp and air temperature was minus four degrees centigrade.

However Lothian’s report said raised ice patches on the road, which Fife considered a possible factor in the collision, were likely formed after the crash.

Mrs Graham denies a charge of driving without due care or attention or without reasonable consideration on the B922 Cluny to Kinglassie Road.

She further denies failing to keep the vehicle under proper control and causing it to collide with Miss Shedden’s Renault Clio, damaging both vehicles and injuring both women.

The trial, before Sheriff Grant McCulloch, continues on May 1.
