Trust to appeal against refusal of windfarm
AN APPEAL is to be lodged against a decision to reject plans for Fife’s first community-owned windfarm in Newburgh.
In June councillors on the north east Fife area committee kicked out an application to erect three 100 metre-tall turbines on the hillside at Braeside of Lindores.
The project, put forward by Newburgh Community Trust, could have generated £331,000 per year for community projects during the turbines’ 25 year lifespan.
Trust chairman, Andrew Arbuckle, said the decision to appeal was made back in November last year at the annual meeting when it was decided that having received public money to carry out many aspects of the application it would be necessary to use the democratic process as far as was possible.
“It is only be right and proper to prepare and lodge an appeal with the local planning committee failing to see the merits of the application and the strength of support from the people in our neighbourhood.
“Many people in and around Newburgh cannot understand why the application was rejected by the council.
“It meets the Scottish Government aims of creating more renewable energy.
“It accords with the stated views of the leader of Fife Council in promoting community owned wind projects and most importantly it has the support of the majority of people in the area.
“The comprehensive report to the committee also showed that it met all the demanding specifications now required of wind turbines.
“It had no official objections although Scottish Natural Heritage did give their view that it would affect the skyline.”
