A KENNOWAY woman is well into her training for not just one, but two marathons, all in the name of charity.

Sarah Hutchison (20) has set herself the challenge of running both the London Marathon and the Edinburgh Marathon which take place later this year - just five weeks apart.

Sarah, who works in the accounts department at The Fairmont St Andrews, is hoping to raise money for PSPA, the charity which looks to help people suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a disease caused by the progressive death of nerve cells in the brain which can lead to difficulty with balance, movement, vision, speech and swallowing. It is believed the disease affects around 4000 people in the UK.

One of those sufferers is Ian Birrell, former manager at the Crows Nest.

He is the uncle of Sarah’s boyfriend Jordan Black, and having got to know him quite well since meeting last summer, Sarah decided that she would like to help raise money for the PSPA charity.

“My friend and I ran the Edinburgh Marathon last year, and although we didn’t do much training we crossed the finish line and it was really good,” said Sarah.

“I’ve always wanted to do the London Marathon.

‘‘Ian’s wife Elizabeth checked with PSPA to see if they had spaces, and they did. London is so difficult to get into so I’m happy PSPA gave me the space.”

She continued: “Ian is such an inspirational man, and I just wanted to do something to help the chairty because it isn’t very well known.”

For now, it is all about getting ready for the double challenge, and Sarah will be stepping up her training in the next few weeks. “I’m going to put in lots more effort than we did for the Edinburgh Marathon last year.

‘‘Hopefully I can get out and do a 20 mile run in the next couple of weeks.”

Sarah is hoping to raise £2000 for the London Marathon, and £1000 for the Edinburgh Marathon.
