St Andrews University student, Victoria Stewart, is celebrating after winning the title of Best Barista in the North regional heat and earning a place in the international Champion of Champions final.

Victoria, who works at Costa Coffee in St Andrews, created espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, flat white coffees and her own speciality drink that wowed the judges.

She had to beat off competition from hundreds of baristas from throughout Scotland and the North of England just to be selected for the regional heat, which was held at the Costa Academy in Edinburgh.

She will now compete against other top coffee makers in the forthcoming Champion of Champion finals in London in a bid to be crowned the best Costa barista in the world.

Victoria (21), who has worked at the Market Street branch for two years, not only demonstrated her coffee making skills by creating a variety of perfect coffees in the competition, she also included her own drink. The ‘Caraginger’ was inspired by her mum’s favourite flavours and is a White Hot Chocolate Ginger Macchiato.

She told the Citizen:”I never expected to get this far and I’m thrilled to be making my way to the finals. The drink is incredibly personal to me. My mum loves the taste of ginger so I wanted to make a drink that would incorporate this rich flavour.

“I’m really looking forward to all the fun the final will bring, as well as the wonderful experience I’m about to embark upon.”

The final will be held at Vinopolis, London, on October 24 and the overall champion will win a 10-day trip for two to a country of her choice with a Costa Coffee connection and spending money.
