PITTENWEEM has joined other villages in the East Neuk of Fife to have a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) installed.

The PAD, which is placed on the wall of the local pharmacy in the Main Street, is part of a joint campaign between East Neuk First Responders and various community councils to provide the lifesaving machines in all East Neuk Villages.

Pittenweem has now followed the lead set by St Monans, Arncroach, Anstruther, Carnbee and Kilconquhar.

Ken Horsburgh, of Pittenweem Community Council, recently thanked all those who donated funds towards the PAD, including Fife Council, Pittenweem Arts festival, the Fisherman’s Mutual Association and the two local football clubs.

Pharmacist Mr Peter Tinkler was thanked for allowing the PAD to be installed on his building.

Mr Horsburgh said: We are delighted by the support this project has had and are arranging awareness sessions in the village in partnership with East Neuk First Responders.

“During these sessions people can find out more about the defibrillator, see how it works and even have a go, we hope as many people as possible will come along.”

Gillian Duncan of East Neuk First Responders added that although these defibrillators can be used without any previous training, it will make their use even more effective if people attend one of the information and training sessions.

The machines can increase the chances of survival following cardiac arrest from 5 per cent to 50 per cent and are safe and simple to use

Ms Duncan added: “If someone is unresponsive, not breathing or taking infrequent noisy breaths phone 999, send someone for the defibrillator, when it arrives press the green on button and follow the instructions.”

Dates for the forthcoming training sessions will be announced on the Pittenweem Community Council information board in the High Street.
