Wayne Hogg, bowler from Markinch
A Markinch bowler reached the quarter-final of the game’s World Indoor Championships, reports MIKE DELANEY.
Wayne Hogg’s run in the competition was only halted by the eventual runner-up and bodes well for success in the future.
In the first-round of the contest at Potters Resort in Norfolk, Wayne knocked out Welsh internationalist Mervyn King, who was seeded fifth.
Another Welsh internationalist, Stewart Anderson, who was seeded eleventh, was beaten to secure a last eight placing.
In the quarter-final against Jason Greenslade, yet another Welsh internationalist, Wayne unluckily lost the first set 7-5, when his opponent hit a short bowl into the head, moving the jack to his own bowl.
In the second set, Wayne dropped three shots on the second end, but managed to level the score 5-5 after five ends.
On the last end, Wayne missed by a fraction to trail the jack back to score the four shots he required to take the game to a tie break, losing the second set 6-8.
Club spokesman, Bill Bell, said: “There is no doubt Wayne was terribly disappointed to lose, but his family, friends and fellow bowlers were immensely proud of his performance against such high quality international bowlers.
“There was also a crumb of comfort to know that Greenslade reached Sunday’s final only to lose to England internationalist, Andy Thomson.”
On Sunday, in the Three Fours competition, played at East Fife Indoor Bowling Club, Markinch’s final qualifying game was against Dovecot B.C. On rink four, R. Bunting, A. Blackadder, K. Bunting and P. Mathewson (skip) were always in command and ran out comfortable winners 16-6.
On rink five, J. Lafferty, J. Davies Jnr., T. Pettigrew and R. Crawford (skip) were trailing 0-6, then 4-7 before they finally got their act together to edge in front 8-7.
The Dovecot ladies put in a spirited fightback to trail 11-12, before finally losing the last two ends and the game 19-11.
On rink six, A. Jones, J. Davies Snr., B. Bell and B. Cowan (skip) started slowly to trail 0-3, but soon edged in front and went on to win 12-5.
This gave Markinch maximum points and confirmed their place in the knockout stage of the competition.
The next game is on Sunday, 5 February at 10am with Strathmiglo B.C. the opposition.
The team to play in this game will be posted on the notice board in the main clubhouse during this week.
