A NEW community group has been formed in Fife with the aim of bringing together the gay community.

OUT in Fife was put together by a group which felt that Fife was lacking a social scene that was suited to them.

David Jackson of the organising team said: “There’s been nothing in Fife for a number of years specifically geared towards the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

“The idea behind OUT In Fife is to create a social scene in Fife, and we started last month when we held our first night out in Dunfermline.”

Need

Over 100 people turned up on the night which David says is proof that there is a need for a social scene for LGBT people.

“Our aim is to encompass the whole of Fife so we’ll be running buses from Leven, Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy to ferry people to our next social event in Dunfermline on September 12.

“We’re also going to hold a night in Kirkcaldy in October and then we’re going to look further afield and hopefully set one up in St Andrews in the future.”

David says the group have plans to grow: “We’re going to apply for charity status. That way we can secure some funding and it’s our intention to open a community centre as our focal point.

Positive

“I’ve had lots of positive comments already. People have met others they normally wouldn’t have, new friendships have been created, and if nothing else it’s a good night out!”

The group have also begun to work closely with the Terrance Higgins Trust who will have a presence at each social night.

David said: “The Trust will have a stall with a sexual health specialist who will give people advice and inform them of services.”

OUT in Fife also intends to hold fundraising activities.

David added: “We’ve only just started but we will definitely grow.”
