Will Cardenden bonfire be extinguished?

organisers of the annual Cardenden community bonfire and fireworks display have asked residents and visitors for their continued support to ensure celebrations can continue in 2013.

This year’s event is organised for Friday, November 2 at Wallsgreen Park, Bowhill.

But event organisers are appealing to all those planning to attend on the night for their support, or else the 2013 celebrations may not go ahead.

Price tag

The expected cost of both the bonfire and fireworks, which alone carry a £4000 price tag, is £8000, and unless the committee responsible can raise the funds, there may be no November 5 celebrations in 2013.

Alex Burns, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It costs a lot of money to hold the event, in particular the fireworks which this year will be over £4000, and there are of course many other added costs.

“The dedicated number of volunteers who form the committee must try and raise more funds to keep this very popular event going.”

Organisers reported more than 5000 revellers last year and expect around the same number for this year’s event.

In addition, the committee have asked that residents do not donate any waste products for the bonfire as has previously been the case.

Extinguish

This is because it took too long to extinguish the fire at last year’s event.

Mr Burns continued: “Due to both the size of the bonfire and various materials burnt at last year’s event, it took the fire brigade nearly three hours to put the bonfire out.

“This resulted in committee members not being able to leave the area until after 3.00 a.m. which is totally unnacceptable.”

As a result, the committee will only be accepting wooden pallets for this year’s bonfire.
