Fife Police drink drive crackdown

A WOMAN from north east Fife caught driving while more than three times over the limit was one of 19 Fife motorists picked up by police in the space of a fortnight.

The 46-year-old was found behind the wheel of her high-performance Honda Civic Type-R during a two-week national crackdown.

A total of 229 motorists were caught under the influence of drink or drugs throughout Scotland, just 11 fewer than last year.

And police say that drivers aged between 17 and 25 are still a cause for concern.

One 23-year-old man who had only held his licence for two weeks was caught driving over the limit in Kirkcaldy, while a 19-year-old, also from Kirkcaldy, provided a breath sample nearly three times the legal limit, as well as committing several other road traffic offences and being found in possession of cocaine.

Said Chief Inspector Brenda Sinclair, head of road policing for Fife Constabulary: “It is encouraging to note there has been a reduction in numbers of motorists found to be driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, but this is a very slight decrease year on year and I would caution against any form of complacency.

“It is of particular concern that so many young drivers think it is appropriate to drink and drive.

“Over the summer season there are many events and occasions where people enjoy an alcoholic refreshment, and are tempted to do so, even when they have their car with them. Whilst we want people to enjoy themselves, our message remains the same, do not drink and drive or take drugs and drive.”

She continued: “Motorists have to take responsibility for their actions, the safety of their passengers and other road users.

“Fife Constabulary will continue to target drink and drug drivers and you will be caught if you drink or take drugs and drive.

“I would encourage the public who suspect anyone of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs to contact the Police on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
