YM project for national award

A PROJECT run at Kirkcaldy YMCA has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

PlusOne Mentoring, a successful initiative giving one to one help to vulnerable young people to divert them from involvement with the youth justice system has been nominated for a Charity Award.

The initiative is also run at YMCAs in Perth and Bellshill and administered through YMCA Scotland.

The Charity Awards is the voluntary sector’s most prestigious excellence recognition scheme and the 2012 winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on June 14.

The project, which is aimed at young people between eight and 14 years, has been shortlisted from hundreds of entries in the children and youth category alongside three other charities.

Relying on the skills and life experiences of local volunteers who work with the youngsters on a one to one basis, the scheme has helped over 60 vulnerable young people, significantly reducing instances of re-offending, improving school attendance, reducing substance misuse and enabling youngsters to achieve their fullest potential.

Peter Crory, chief executive of YMCA Scotland, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to have been nominated for such a prestigious UK award, and to be shortlisted at this level is a huge encouragement.

‘‘We have already been able to see so many young lives transformed through PlusOne and getting this wider recognition from our peers recognises all that hard work from our volunteers and staff.”

If the YMCA wins its category it will also be in the running to pick up the overall Award for Excellence, selected from the 10 category winners.
