Young St Andrews poet has a way with words

A local schoolboy’s way with words has earned him runner-up spot in a prestigious national contest.

Martin Newman, a Year 11 (S4) pupil at St Leonards School, was chosen as one of only 10 winners and runners-up from almost 1000 entries in the iF Poems/The Times Young Poet Competition.

Martin’s poem, entitled ‘Season of Fire and Fog,’ was published online after being judged to be one of the best in the age 13-16 category.

Martin, from Blebo Craigs, said: “The poem is about autumn really, and it was very much inspired by the Fife countryside.”

The 15-year-old honed his poetic skills by taking part in a school trip to the Arvon Creative Writing Foundation centre at Moniack Mhor, where he had the chance to work with the poets Maggi Gibson and Ann Sansom on technique.

He is also co-editor of Writers Block, a soon to be published anthology of creative writing by St Leonards students, and plans to continue with his poetry by entering further competitions.

He added: “Being a poet would be my absolute dream job but I suspect it would be a good idea to have a fallback plan as well!”

Martin’s poem, and those of the other winners and runners-up, can be viewed at http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/poetrycompetition/article3390687.ece
