Youngsters push the boat out in Newburgh
Naming and launching ceremony for Newburgh Rowing Club's new St Ayles skiff.
NEWBURGH Rowing Club’s new St Ayles skiff, built largely by the town’s young people, has been officially named and launched.
Working under the guidance of president Sam Marshall and committee member Tom Johnston, the youngsters built the boat so that the club could take part in Scottish Coastal Rowing Association regattas all over the country.
The naming ceremony took place on Saturday, July 21 — the culmination of a huge community effort in the town.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Thanks have been given to David Clarke for use of his yard and Fife Constabulary, Fife Council, Newburgh’s own charity shop and Newburgh Highland Games for their funding contributions.
Other fund-raising has been by way of two coffee mornings and a sponsored row by the members.
The original driving force behind the skiff project was club president Sam, who has been supported by many older members of the community and by the Tayside Institute and Community Centre.
OPPORTUNITY
On August 18 the town’s annual coble boat race and heritage day will take place, followed by a St Ayles skiff regatta on the Tay in September.
It is hoped the regatta will become an annual event itself.
The club has already bought kit for building a second skiff, which will be a further opportunity for the older members of the community to pass on their skills and craft to the younger ones.
Membership of Newburgh Rowing Club is open to people of any age.
