A St Andrews restaurant famous throughout the area for its burgers is looking to create some new, tasty toppings to tempt its diners.
And Ziggys – one of the longest established, privately owned restaurants in the town – wants to hear your ideas.
The restaurant, which has been serving up American style cuisine for over 30 years, has turned to Citizen and Herald readers to see if they can come up with an original topping to give its favourite dish a new twist.
The winner will then be invited to Ziggys where they will get the chance to create their burger idea.
Anna Maria Wishart, head chef and co-owner, is looking forward to hearing some of the suggestions as burgers are big business at Ziggys.
“Burgers account for around 50 per cent of our sales,” she said. “We can sell up to 80 burgers a day.”
When Ziggys first opened in 1983 the burgers were made on the premises using a specially created recipe. As the popularity of the burgers grew, so did the time it took to make the burgers, so Ziggys employed a butcher to make the burgers using its recipe.
When he retired, Ziggys turned to award-winning butcher J B Penman of Crail. Working together, they created a new burger recipe – and that’s what you’ll find in Ziggys today.
Anna Maria said: “The burgers are delivered daily. This means they are as fresh as possible, making for an even better burger.”
All their burgers are handmade using 100 per cent pure steak mince. Served on a toasted white flour bap with salad and accompanied with fries and fresh coleslaw the burgers are hard to resist!
The success of the burgers at Ziggys isn’t just down to the excellent quality and taste of the burger – what goes on the burger is also important.
With over 20 toppings to choose from, how do the team at Ziggys come up with new and exciting topping combinations?
“We get inspiration from places we have eaten, and flavours we have enjoyed,” said Anna Maria. “The toppings available have changed very little since day one because we feel they offer the customer everything they need, but we are always open to new suggestions.”
Each week Ziggys has a special burger showcasing the toppings available.
Anna Maria added: “During the World Cup we were inspired by the Luis Suarez ‘incident’ and we had a burger special named after him. It was two 6oz gourmet burgers filled with spicy salsa and topped with melted cheese. Delicious ... and the customers loved it!”
Regular current toppings include cheddar cheese, bacon, stilton, haggis, chilli, Tennessee JD Glaze, and much more.
So do you think you could come up with a top topping for a burger? Whether it is weird and wonderful or just simply delicious flavours, we want to hear from you!
