Youth theatre group takes centre stage

BUCKHAVEN based youth theatre group Kinetic is wowing crowds once again with a piece of original work.

The group is currently involved in the National Theatre of Scotland’s ‘Exchange’ programme, a week-long festival of youth theatre, where the next generation of theatre-makers from Scotland and across the world present a programme of devised pieces.

These are helped and created in collaboration with some of today’s most accomplished national and international theatre-makers.

Kinetic, based at the Buckhaven Theatre, performed its work ‘Fight or Flight’ on Friday and will do so again tomorrow (Thursday) at the Macrobert theatre in Stirling.

It was created by Kinetic members Kim Hardie, Michael Fraser, Scott Ringan, Ricky Williamson and Jonathan Jonstone and examines choice and the directions it pulls you in.

“We researched local news stories as our starting point as it was important to us to create a performance that was locally relevant,” Sam Hardie, Kinetic’s assistant director said.

“The process has been a new experience for us all to create an original theatre piece, normally we are used to using script.

“This opportunity allowed us to collaborate with the creative team at Kinetic and our creative partner Tommy Small.”

Exchange will present eight brand new productions in total, created and performed by youth theatre companies from all over Scotland and, also this year, by visiting groups from Kildare, Ireland, and from Brooklyn, New York City.

The group is also set to take to the stage soon with another production, Daddy Long Legs.

The performance is said to be a “harrowing, thought-provoking examination of teenage violence, fear and the human capacity for cruelty.”

The first performance will be on June 9 at Buckhaven Theatre.
