A TRIO of local women have continued their success in international masters swimming, reports MIKE DELANEY.
Wendy Szaranek, Lara Ferguson and Elaine Gillies and turned in fine perfformances at the European Masters in Ukraine.
The Carnegie Swimming Club trio, plus Freuchie’s Janet McLean, braved a 36-hour journey and conditions which ranged from searing heart to freezing rain in the outdoor pool in Yalta.
Specialist breaststrokerWendy, Glenrothes, competing in the 40-44 age group, won silver and bronze over 200 metres and 100m in times of 3:02.05 and 1:24.45 respectively.
She was just outside the medals with fourth place swims in 50m breaststroke and 200 IM.
Lara, who lives in Leslie and was competing in the 30-34 age group, won a brilliant bronze medal in 100m breaststroke in 1:30.72.
Her other two swims involved a ninth place finish in 100m freestyle in 1:10.95 and a 12th place finish in 50m freestyle in 32.55.
Competing in the 40-44 age group, Elaine had a best performance swim of seventh in 100m freestyle in 1:11.41 and eighth in 50m backstroke in 41.08.
She also had an impressive 10th place finish in 50m freestyle in 31.26.
Nearly 2000 competitors from 38 countries competed in the event, which involved swimming, diving and synchro.
Janet won gold for 400m freestyle in 5:00.47 and followed up with a silver in 200m butterfly in 2:34.14. She concluded her successful competition with bronze medals in 100m butterfly and 200m IM.
On cumulative ages the quartet competed in the 120-159 age group for relays.
The girls won a bronze medal in the 4x50m freestyle relay in a magnificent time of 2:03.45 in an event that was won by a home team from Kiev.
In the second and final relay, the swimmers just missed out on a bronze medal in the 4x50m Medley, finishing 0.05 behind the Romanian team.
