It’s that time of year again - the Links Market is preparing to roll into town.

And once again something for everyone is promised by the organisers.

Around 120,000 people are expected to come to the centuries-old event this year, which will officially open on Kirkcaldy’s Esplanade at 2.00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 and run for six days until the following Monday.

The Links Market is still the longest street fair in Europe.

Alex Colquhoun, chairman of the Scottish section of the Showmen’s Guild, said: “This year we have two rides coming which have not been to Kirkcaldy before.

“One, Atmosphere, was meant to arrive last year brand new, but it was delayed in the factory in Italy.

“It has since appeared at two other events, but it’s a first at the Links Market this year.

“The second new ride for Kirkcaldy is Voodoo Dancer.

“Again, it’s been to other events and proved popular.

“We’ll also have the usual mix of traditional children’s rides, waltzers, dodgems, carousels and food stalls.

“Unfortunately the log flume won’t be coming this year.

“We’re really looking forward to another successful Links Market.

“Last year was the first time we used a private security firm and it worked out fantastically.

“The police only came down on to the market when needed to and it worked really well.

“The weather wasn’t too bad last year but it was cold.

“The weather over the last few weeks worries us a little, but we’re hoping if it stays dry we can have a good market.

“If we can get the numbers out it makes it all worthwhile.

“I think the Links Market is as important to the people of Kirkcaldy as it is for the Showmen’s Guild.”

Revellers are urged to take heed of safety warnings and height restrictions and to keep back from the Esplanade when the market is being set up and rides are being dismantled.

Motorists are advised the Esplanade will be closed to through traffic and local diversions will be in place before, during and after the Links Market takes place.

The road will be closed from 10.00 p.m. on Saturday to 4.00 p.m. on April 24.

Diversions will take drivers via Nicol Street and Abbotshall Road.

Market opening times: Wednesday 2.00 - 10.30 p.m.; Thursday 12.30-10.30 p.m.; Friday 12.30-11.00 p.m.; Saturday 12.30-11.00 p.m.; Sunday 1.00-9.00 p.m.; Monday 12.30-10.00 p.m.
