Enterprising pupils at Markinch Primary have devised a novel way of raising money for the town – by opening a weekly community cafe.
The Cuppa Cafe is open each Friday from 2pm-3pm for the public to enjoy.
Primary 5/6 pupils came up with the idea when working on the school’s topic for the year – money.
The pupils will keep their tips, which will be put towards a treat at the end of the year, but all other money will go back to the community.
Principal teacher Jenna Gilfillan said she was very proud of the pupils.
“They’ve worked this all out by themselves,” she said.
“They’ve made up rotas, they place the orders for stock, they designed the posters and they have created a business link with the local cafe Banners in Markinch who came in and taught them how to serve and be polite to customers.
“We received funding from the Co-op and from the Glenrothes Enterprise Fund to help launch it and now we’re looking for community groups or organisations to get in touch to apply for some of the money which the cafe makes.
“It’s all about giving back to the community.”
