Coming soon to a former cinema near you is... something of an intriguing mystery.

Two weeks ago the Press reported that the old cinema building and the adjoining former YWCA building were under offer after having been left lying empty for almost 15 years.

In recent weeks question mark posters had been added to the front canopy of the former ABC cinema in Kirkcaldy High Street, but this week a new banner has appeared.

Placed across the front of the canopy, it directs people to a Facebook page that begins to shed a little light on what may be in store for the premises in the future.

However those behind the social media page and the project are keeping everyone in suspense about their plans.

A statement on the Facebook page said: “What was this building? What is it now? Since closing in 2000, the memory of this wondrous building has faded from many people’s minds.

“What effect has this had to the town and the building itself?

“But crucially, what can this building become?

“We have a plan that could change the course of this magnificent site: protect the heritage of a place that holds so many fond memories for so many people, and also assist with much needed growth into our town of Kirkcaldy, which, let’s face it, has had a very tough time recently.

“The seeds of change are growing and we would like to contribute massively to this.”

There is little suggestion from the social media page as to the plans for the building as yet, leaving everyone reading the page wondering.

The page can be found by searching for New Vision for Old ABC Kirkcaldy on Facebook and it already has 795 ‘likes’.

A number of guesses as to what’s happening with the building have already been made online, with some suggestions including a cinema, a live music venue or a even another pound shop.

The Facebook page description goes on to say that it intends to delve into the history of the cinema building in the coming weeks using “never seen before documentation”.

The statement ends: “Then we will reveal our plans and vision for our beloved auld cinema... stay tuned!”

The last picture house

The cinema on the High Street closed its doors in December 2000 when it was the MGM cinema.
Several false hopes of resurrecting the B listed cinema building have started then failed.
At one time Kirkcaldy was at the top of the cinema going game, and was in the unique position of having more cinemas per head of population than any town in Scotland.

The town was known for its picture houses which offered plenty of variety for film fans.
