A new group for young people diagnosed with, undergoing treatment for, or recovering from cancer has just started up in Kirkcaldy.
The Young Person’s Group is being run by our Maggie’s Centre and the Teenage Cancer Trust - and it has just held its first meeting at the centre in the grounds of Victoria Hospital.
The group offers help and support to young people from mid-teens to early 20s, with information and advice.
It also provides an opportunity for them to socialise with others who have or are going through similar experiences to their own.
And although the first meeting was only attended by four young people, organisers Elspeth Salter from Maggie’s and Helen Veitch from the Teenage Cancer Trust say they do not expect it to draw large numbers, but are confident they will increase as more young people learn about it.
“We want to raise awareness that the group is there for any young people with cancer to come along and find out what it is all about and meet others in similar situations,” explained Elspeth.
“The first meeting was all about getting to know each other and just talking to find out what sort of things they want the group to offer them.
‘‘There is already a young people’s group running in Edinburgh, and this will be loosely based on it.
“As well as the health and wellbeing advice and sharing their experiences, there will also be a big social aspect to it, and they are planning outings like trips to the cinema and bowling, with most of the meetings involving pizza!
‘‘It is their group and they will decide what they want from it.
“We will probably have a ‘Look Good Feel Better’ session, and discussion about applying for jobs and the difficulties they may come up against when looking for jobs, but ultimately it will be for them to decide the programme.”
The new group is the final missing piece of the support group puzzle which already includes Children’s Days for primary school-aged youngsters with a parent who has cancer and a group for parents with children with cancer.
The next meeting of the Young Person’s Group will again take place at Maggie’s Centre on March 6, and thereafter on the first Thursday of each month from 6.30-8.30 p.m.
