The Royal Air Force has played a major role as part of the communities in Leuchars and the surrounding area for more than a century.

As the RAF prepares to complete its move north to Lossiemouth, it has made “one last gesture of appreciation to a community that has supported station personnel and their families for generations”.

This gift is a token of our heartfelt appreciation and through it we are pleased to be able to make a positive contribution to the lives of those who’ve made such a difference to ours

This gesture was in the form of donations totalling more than £30,000 which have been gifted to local charities and other worthy causes.

Among the organisations presented with funds were local branches of Storehouse, which runs a foodbank in north east Fife, and Families First, an advocacy group committed to supporting parents and their children.

Local primary schools and children’s groups in Leuchars, Guardbridge and Balmullo have also benefitted, while Angela Brown was delighted to accept a cheque on behalf of Fife Women’s Aid.

Angela said: “The money will go toward providing much needed support for women and children affected by domestic violence in Fife, whether that be the provision of safe accommodation, legal advice or fun days out for the children to simply get away from it all.”

The donations are the proceeds from the 2013 Leuchars Airshow, the last to be held at the base.

The presentation were made by Station Commander RAF Leuchars, Wing Commander Neville Clayton on behalf of all station personnel.

“Over the course of the last century the people of North East Fife have been unwavering in their support for RAF Leuchars, its personnel and their families,” he said.

“This gift is a small token of our heartfelt appreciation and through it we are pleased to be able to make a positive contribution to the lives of those who have made such a difference to ours.”
