They say that everyone has their secrets and that’s very true of the family in this novel by Rachel Hore.
Following the death of her father Tom, Lucy Cardwell is going through his old papers when she decides to find out more about an uncle she knows very little about.
The search takes her to the town of St Florian and to Carlyon Manor, now lying as ruins after a fire, where her father’s family lived for years.
While she’s in town she is lucky enough to meet someone who knew and grew up with her grandmother and knew her uncle Rafe – the elderly Beatrice.
The old lady shares tales of times gone by with Lucy and the story at this time slips back through the years, the flashback style of writing something that Hore has used in her other novels.
This was a really enjoyable book and the storyline kept me hooked until the end.
With all the talk of St Florian’s coves it made me want to pay a visit to the seaside on England’s south coast.
