While this is a straightforward whodunnit, the real interest is in the bleakly realistic portrayal of life in the trenches, on both sides, plus the excellent development of the character of Watson, having to stand on his own without the crutch of his famous detective friend (who does make an appearance but is frail and pain-ridden, though still crucial to Watson). Well-paced, historically fascinating - just a great read.
