This arrived from LoveFilm last week and once Holmes Jnr spotted it, there has been little else on the TV - I think I have seen it about eight times all told by now!

Not that I mind because this follow-up to the original smash hit is another gem and far funnier than most so-called ‘grown-up’ comedies.

This time, Gru (Steve Carell) has given up the super villain game to look after his three adopted daughters and develop his business making ‘jams and jellies’ in his lair.

However, he is recruited by the shadowy Anti-Villain League to help them track down a master criminal intent on creating a race of indestructible monsters to take over the world.

Reluctant at first, he eventually comes good to protect those he loves, including eccentric AVL agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig).

Of course, the real stars are the minions - some of the funniest moments are what they are doing to the side of the main action.

Not as bold or unique as the original, obviously, but still a fun watch.
