This week we have been caught up in Jubilee fever as we have celebrated 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Jubilee is not a new principle but one that goes back to Bible times. It starts with the principle of Sabbath rest on the 7th day of the week when the people rested from work.
The same principle applied on a seven year cycle with every seventh year being a year when both the people and land rested (no planting or harvesting) and slaves were released.
After seven cycles of seven years the following year (the 50th year) would be a Jubilee year when the people and land rested, slaves were released and debts and lands were restored to their rightful owner.
Jesus referred to this principle when he started out on his ministry when he said he had come to bring rest, release and restoration.
As we celebrate the 60 year reign of our Queen remember that we too can know a Jubilee of rest, release and restoration through Jesus Christ, our Lord!
