Old dog, new tricks ...

Have your say

I like to think that I have always been able to move with the times - and given my current job title I certainly hope that is true! But sometimes I fit the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’, only too well.

Our part of town was one of the last to get the new bin system and suddenly the simple process of disposing of rubbish became an exercise in mental agility. No more the straightforward choice of waste in one bin and paper in another - I now have to work out what is food, what is paper, what is recyclable and what is just, well, rubbish.

S has been doing her best to keep me right but the eye-rolling and tutting as she finds yet another object in the wrong bin tells its own story (foil lids, I have a real problem with foil lids...). Not only that but doing the washing up is no longer just cleaning dishes - I’ve now got to rinse tins, plastic pots, bottles and so on, stuff I used to just throw away.

I am getting better though, which can’t be said about getting used to the new carrier bag charge - I think I have remembered once to take a bag with me rather than have to pay for one. I know the reasons behind it, blah, blah... but it’s another complication my poor wee brain could do without...

Kids play: S and her mum had their annual pre-Christmas shopping weekend in Glasgow, leaving me with the offspring for a couple of days. After 42 years of avoiding children at all costs, I freely admit I’m not a natural parent but in the near five years since Holmes Jnr came along, I’ve tried to pick it up as I go - though an instruction manual would have been helpful! There are times when I do feel like I have no idea what I am doing, but then there are the small moments when the kids do or say something that make being their dad the best thing ever. Anyway, the weekend went fine, indeed the way two-and-a-half going on 16 Little Miss kept me right, it was as if their mum hadn’t even gone away...

This week... Started watching ‘Dominion’, judgement currently reserved... bought my first Christmas present (very early for me)...
