This bittersweet Ken Loach comedy is one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time - but perhaps being on Islay, the island of whisky, when I first saw it may have helped me get into the spirit just a little bit more easily!
The main character Robbie - last seen on our screens as reluctant gangster Gareth in River City - escapes a prison sentence by the skin of his teeth, and is given one last chance.
This time he’s determined to turn his life as his young girlfriend Leonie has also just given birth to their son, Luke.
While serving a community service order, Robbie meets Rhino, Albert and Mo who, like him, can’t get work because of their criminal records. Little does Robbie imagine how turning to drink might change their lives - not cheap fortified wine, but the best malt whiskies in the world. Will it be ‘slopping out’ for the next 20 years, or a new future with ‘Uisge Beatha’ the ‘Water of Life?’ Only the angels know........
