Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt of all time, The Monuments Men is an action-packed drama telling the tale of a special platoon of civilians set up and trained to venture into Germany to rescue a hoarde of priceless works of art stolen by the Nazis as they marauded through Europe.
The men are a motley crew made up of museum curators, directors and art historians who are little prepared for the task ahead.
And they also face a race against time to prevent 1000 years of some of the most iconic pieces of art and sculpture being destroyed by the Germans as the allies advance into Germany and the Reich falls.
The film was criticised by the history experts for not being true to the facts of the original daring mission, and more could have been made of it. Nonetheless it is an entertaining film with a sterling A-list cast including George Clooney, who also directed the film, Matt Damon and Bill Murray who all give credible, if slightly stereotyped performances.
