With just 14 weeks to go come Saturday, preparations are continuing for younger brother’s wedding - and I’ve still not given much (any) thought to my best man duties.

The dismissive “oh, there’s plenty of time to worry about the speech”, has now become “er, better start worrying about the speech”, which means in another couple of months I’ll be “heck, still not done anything about the speech”. I like to be prepared.

At least the stag weekend is organised and in order to give all us 40-somethings (and older) time to recover, it takes place in two weeks time - a civilised night out in Edinburgh followed the next day by hospitality at the Ramsdens Cup final to, hopefully, watch Rovers pick up the trophy.

If we all manage to stay awake that long ...

Ice chips: I used to frequent the ice rink as often as my own house back in the day but Saturday was my first visit to the arena in over a year. The funny thing is, it’s the kind of place that as soon as you enter, it always feels like it was only a week or so since you were last there.

Lots of familiar sights, sounds, smells and faces unique to the building, even the coffee tasted the same as the last time I was there - in fact, it may have actually been the same cup...

Still, I must have been a lucky charm as Flyers won their ‘must-win’ game and it was good to sample it again.

And it’s reassuring to know ‘Cotton Eye Joe’ and ‘Tell Me Ma’ are still being played somewhere...

Lost: The disappearance of the Malaysian airliner is a mystery straight out of the files of Mulder and Scully, or a JJ Abrams plot.

Indeed, I would be looking for it on an island somewhere that has polar bears, strange black fog and a bizarre underground complex...

This week... Got ‘Despicable Me 2’ from LoveFilm, let Holmes Jnr watch it, now seen it eight times...
