Paralympics shine brightly in Leven

WITH the Olympics now a distant memory, Leven has been lit up with Paralympic fever over the past week.

On Friday, the torch visited the town and residents were given the chance to be photographed with it at Sainsbury’s.

As a Games sponsor, the supermarket has been touring the official torch around the country but Leven was its only stop in Fife.

As well as shoppers and staff,who were delighted to see the iconic item of memorabilia up close, pupils from Parkhill and Mountfleurie primary schools were also allowed some time off from their normal classwork.

The fun didn’t stop there. though. On Monday the store had a VIP visitor in the form of Paralympic medal winner Lara Ferguson.

Lara, from Leslie, visited the store and spoke to staff and shoppers about her experiences as a swimmer with a physical disability in the open class events. As well as competing at Atlanta in 1996 and Athens in 2004, Lara won bronze in the S9 100 metres breaststroke and silver in the 4x100 metres medley relay at the Sydney 2000 Games.

·Those who had their picture taken with the torch on Friday are invited to go back along to Sainsbury’s where they can be collected free of charge.
