Glenrothes chef Peter Philliban can put his feet up this this festive period, safe in the knowledge he’s helped bring the taste of Christmas to around a thousand diners.

For the Fife College hospitality student will have helped to cook in excess of 1,000 Christmas lunches by the time he hangs up his apron.

Between helping out at the Lomond Centre in Glenrothes and in the college’s bistro within its Stenton Campus, Peter will have prepared a record number of Christmas meals.

The 55-year-old former builder has been active in the kitchen for many years treating culinary passion as a hobby.

But he decided to make it a profession a few years ago after leaving the building trade where he had worked for 30 years.

And he told the Gazette since enroling on the college course, he “never looked back”.

“I had trouble with my neck and the heavy work, year in year out as a bricklayer, took its toll, “ explained Peter.

“I was advised by my doctor to look for a different career.

‘‘I had always enjoyed cooking and so decided to give it a go and went to college.

“I popped into the Lomond Centre some weeks back to see if they needed any help over Christmas as I knew the experience would also help me on my NQ Professional Cookery course.

“This is my second year at college and I’m enjoying every minute. The lecturers are great and been really supportive.”

The chef also had praise for the college staff and has big plans to carry on working towards gaining the qualifications that he hopes will secure him that dream job in the kitchen.

“The team of staff at the Lomond Centre have also been very welcoming and I have very much enjoyed the experience, said Peter.

“I hope to go on to study the HND next year and then secure a job in the industry, ideally working in Fife.”

And the sweat and toil put in by Peter and his kitchen colleagues in the last few weeks cooking Christmas meals at the Lomond Centre and bistro was not the last Peter cooked this year.

For he was busy in the kitchen at home of course on Christmas day cooking full festive dinner with all the trimmings for all the family!
