Police in North East Fife have warned householders in the area of an increase in callers at their door offering to carry out work on their home or garden.
This type of activity is often associated with an increase in householders becoming victim to distraction type thefts or fraudulent activity. This can involve being persuaded to have unnecessary and poorly executed work carried out which is greatly overpriced or being asked to pay in advance for materials only for the ‘workmen’ to disappear and the work is never carried out.
PC Paul Buttercase, community safety officer for north east Fife, said: “The people carrying out this type of crime are often referred to as bogus workmen, however they are callous criminals who deliberately target elderly and vulnerable members of the community.”
