Coming soon to a cinema near you... it’s The Regent: The Sequel.
Yes, Leven will soon have its own cinema again following the takeover of the building by a local man with plenty of movie experience.
Graeme Reekie, of Leven, was involved in the initial re-launch of The Regent back in 2010, and now, following a hugely successful four years at the Kino Cinema in Glenrothes, he’s adding another string to his bow and returning to his roots by breathing new life into Leven’s picturehouse.
Speaking to the Mail this week, Graeme said the sale was only confirmed around three weeks ago after two months of discussions.
“It will be good to have another cinema,” he said. “I was involved withThe Regent when it first started, and it really means a lot to me.
“I didn’t want to see it lost forever, so now I’ve come full circle and have taken it over.”
And Graeme has big plans for the Commercial Road picture house, which has also been used as a bingo hall in the past and work has already started on renovations.
As well as repairs to the roof, Graeme plans to replace all of the carpets and old furniture, as well as installing a brand new screen which will be bigger and lower so it can be seen more easily from the stalls.
Those who have visited the Kino Cinema will be well aware of the comfy sofas in their largest screen, and this is something Graeme is planning to replicate at The Regent.
And customers can take advantage of a bigger kiosk section with hot dogs and draught drinks on offer.
But he is keen to stress that the historical importance of the building, which was built around 1922, will be retained and the Art Deco features will all be kept, including the proscenium arch and plaster work.
Graeme said: “Optimistically thinking – perhaps too optimistically – we’d like to be open by the October holidays, but if not, definitely by the end of the year. I’m really excited about the project ahead and to bring back the cinema to the town that I live in Leven is very differnent to Glenrothes, so there’s lots of opportunity to try new things here.”
