The “world famous” Craw’s Nest Hotel in Anstruther has been put on the market by owners Symphony Hotels for offers around £1 million.
It last changed hands in 2006 when it was sold to the Perth-based hotel group by the parents of radio DJ Edith Bowman, Sandy and Eleanor Bowman.
The 50-bedroom property had been in the Bowman/Clark family for more than 40 years and it is understood they sold for an undisclosed sum thought to be well into seven figures.
But after a seven year run, the property is once again on the market to allow the owner to concentrate on the development of two Perth-based hotels.
Alistair Letham, a director with selling agent Colliers International, commented: “The Craw is a popular ‘all round’ hotel, which attracts great patronage from locals and visitors alike.
“It is a well-established and successful business, which offers the new owners an outstanding opportunity to further grow and develop the hotel’s reputation for seaside leisure and golf breaks, weddings and its legendary dinner dances.”
The former manse, which also boasts two bars, a meeting room, restaurant, function room and gardens has already attracted interest from prospective buyers.
But the hotel’s managing director Mike Sheffield was keen to tell the Mail that, while on the market, it was very much business as usual at the Craw’s Nest.
“We are still trading and still open every day; no change,” he said.
Reflecting on his tenure at the Craw, he commented: “It’s been interesting days to say the least.”
He added: “ Ninety five per cent of the staff are from Fife and specifically the East Neuk.
“Generations of people have grown up with the Craw’s Nest and then gone on to have children themselves.
”We hold lots of annual events, including charity fundraisers and we host quite a lot local weddings.
Mr Sheffield concluded: “We really are a firm fixture in the local community.”
