Cardenden local Greg McEwan, along with friends Garry MacKay and Lee Peyton, took on the challenge of a lifetime this year, and raised nearly £25,000 for charity.

In June 2012, the trio set off on their Epic 2012 challenge, travelling 135 miles from Gallie Craig Lighthouse to Milngavie by bike, before walking the full 96 miles of the West Highland Way and finally tackling the Great Glen by kayak. And there was the slight problem of climbing Ben Nevis before their last leg too.

They completed their challenge in five days, 12 hours, battling wind, rain and fog to get to their final destination at John O’Groats.

“We always knew it was going to be tough but you can never fully prepare yourself for the unknown,” said Greg. “Yorkhill is an awesome charity and we are delighted to have succeeded in our challenge and hope our funds help many of patients at the hospital.”

The £24,417.82 raised will go to Yorkhill Children’s Foundation to help the orthopaedic surgery service.
