A woman has died after a head-on crash on the outskirts of Glenrothes, reports MIKE DELANEY.

The 45 year-old, who has not yet been named, was airlifted to hospital after the accident on the road between the town and Leven on Tuesday afternoon, but died that evening.

Both she and the man who was driving the car they had been travelling in had to be cut free from the wreckage after it was involved in a collision with a tipper-truck, whose driver was also injured.

The road was closed following the smash, which happened on the A911 east of Balgomie Castle, to allow all three emergency services to deal with the aftermath of the crash and investigate the causes of the accident.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident.
