A YOUNG Cupar man has broken through into the top level of refereeing in Scotland.
David McGeachie (22) has been promoted to officiate in the Scottish Football League, even though he only began refereeing in 2002.
David, who worked his way through the grades to join an elite group, said he was thrilled at his appointment.
"I heard about the promotion from a colleague before I received the official letter from the SFA and I thought it was a wind-up at first," he said.
"It was totally unexpected and I look forward to the challenge."
He thanked everyone who had helped him reach this level, including his family and the Fife Referee Association.
Association president Colin Brown said David had done exceptionally well in a short space of time and felt sure he would continue to learn and improve, ensuring further progress.
"He is an example of what can be achieved with a combination of ability, commitment, enthusiasm and hard work," he said.
"Additionally, to reach the level David has, he has had to pass a rigorous fitness test – in fact the same test that FIFA referees undergo."
David felt there had been an increased interest in refereeing and encouraged people of all ages who were keen on football to consider taking it up.
"If nothing else, you will have learned something new and will understand the game better."
The association said Fife referees had been involved in top junior matches, Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League action as well as the Scottish Cup.
The Kingdom has also been represented on the international stage in UEFA and FIFA tournaments, such as the Champions League.
Classes for a referees' introductory course start at Kirkcaldy High School on Monday, September 8, and run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for eight weeks (all Mondays).
The cost is £20, but some discounts may be available and the course is free to eligible pupils of Kirkcaldy High School.
Both males and females can apply, provided they are at least 16 years of age when the course begins.
