ICE hockey bosses will meet on next week to decide the future of the Northern League.
It is hoped that the tournament can be expanded to involve more teams from England, and a number have been approached.
Proposals are believed to include the creation of a cross border league with up to three imports per team.
The crunch meeting will take place on Sunday, July 5, and should end with a decision on whether to adopt or scrap the plans for expansion.
League spokesman Jim Anderson told SportsPress: "We will find out on July 5 whether the English teams we approached have decided to go ahead with our proposals.
"I'm reasonably optimistic based on the feedback from our first meeting, but it will all depend on team's budgets.
