THE torrential rain of the past week took its toll on the Canniepairt, forcing the postponement of what was to be Tayport's first competitive game of the season, on Wednesday evening.
A referee's inspection in the late afternoon saw the DJ Laing League Cup tie against Dundee North End called off, due to the waterlogged pitch.
It was hoped that the fixture could instead take place last night (Thursday), assuming the Canniepair
t had dried out sufficiently.
Whether or not the North End clash has gone ahead, 'Port will play East Craigie on Saturday, in another sectional tie, in the same competition.
Given the geographical rationale behind the League Cup sections, the same teams seem destined to be pitted against each other every year, for the foreseeable future, which takes away all sense of a novelty factor.
That said, East Craigie are perhaps due to spring a surprise, as previous recent encounters have been one-sided affairs.
Last August, Tayport strolled to a 4-0 win on the Canniepairt, while, in 2006, when a tedious home and away format was in place, 'Port also scored four without reply at home, after running out 5-0 winners at Craigie Park.
No doubt, therefore, as to which outfit will be expected to chalk up a victory tomorrow.
In their quest for goals, the Super League side will look to Darren Scott and Robbie Holden, both of whom were prolific scorers for their former junior clubs, albeit below Super League level.
In support, there will be the inimitable Brian Craik, who is reaching the end of his career, but will stay weigh in with his share of goals.
The match against East Craigie is scheduled to kick off at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow and Tayport will be in action again on Wednesday, when they entertain Dundee Violet, again in the DJ Laing League Cup. Kick-off for that fixture should be 6.45 p.m.
