  • McGlynn looks to lift his players for visit of Alloa
RAITH Rovers manager John McGlynn has had to remind his players that they are still protecting an unbeaten run, after admitting Saturday's draw felt more like a defeat.
The Kirkcaldy side go into the crucial Scottish Cup third round tie against Alloa Athletic looking to continue a great run of league form that has seen them take 19 from the last 21 points available.

McGlynn has had to lift his players after Brechin came back from two goals down to earn a draw in the top of the table clash at Stark's Park to end Rovers winning streak.

"After the game on Saturday we were all very much down because at 2-0 up we had the points in the bag," he said. "To throw it away was disappointing.

"However, if we had been 2-0 down and come back to get two-each, we'd still have got one point. It wasn't our seventh win in a row, which we were trying to achieve, but it wasn't a defeat either.

"We've still picked up 19 points out of 21, which is good form. It was two teams, closely matched, at times cancelling each other out.

"We missed chances that could've put the game beyond them, but once we went 2-0 up we stopped doing what we had been doing and allowed Brechin to become better than us.

"They got the momentum from getting a goal back, and from then it was hard to get back in the game."

The draw meant Rovers held onto top spot in the Second Division, but McGlynn believes league form will count for nothing when the Wasps call on cup duty.

"Cup-ties generally come down to who performs on that particular day," McGlynn explained. "We have to come out the blocks early, make Alloa feel uncomfortable, and try to get the first goal and build on that.

"Alloa will be thinking like most teams coming here — stop them for 20 minutes, don't let them get a goal, keep ourselves solid and hit them on the counter attack.

"They will perhaps hope to sneak a goal and defend for their lives. We've got to pass the ball quickly, with quality, create chances get the fans behind us and be clinical."

The potential financial benefit of making the next round is the club's main priority.

"The rewards of victory could be massive with all the SPL clubs coming into the draw," McGlynn pointed out.

If Raith are to progress in the season's Scottish Cup, they will have to do so without their top scorer. Dundee United have refused permission for Kevin Smith to feature in the competition to prevent the on-loan forward from becoming cup-tied, should he return to Tannadice in January.

McGlynn said: "That leaves us with the option of going back to 4-4-2, or go with what we did on Saturday and put Gareth Wardlaw up top.

"We'll weigh it up and do what we feel is best. The good thing is, Gareth came on and scored, which will have done his confidence the world of good. The 4-3-3 system has been working for us and we're very pleased about that."

The Raith boss was delighted with Saturday's attendance, and called on the fans who helped swell the home end to over 2000 on Saturday to return for this week's cup tie.

"It's financially difficult times for everyone but we only have two home games between now and Christmas and it would be great to have another big crowd for a Scottish Cup tie," he added.
