A HISTORIC season for Raith Rovers could take a big step closer to becoming a memorable one should the team continue its winning streak in the Fife derby on Saturday.
In the same week as The Press launches the Raith 125 — the search for the greatest XI players ever to wear a Rovers shirt — the club's 125th team is going for its fifth straight league win.

The last Raith side to achieve such a feat was Jimmy Nicholl's Coca-Cola Cup winning side, which won six First Division matches on the bounce in early 1995 before going on to claim the title.

Based on recent performances, the current Rovers side could eclipse that run, but with East Fife desperate for bragging rights over their bigger rivals and, for some, their former club, a huge challenge awaits the Kirkcaldy side at new Bayview.

Rovers go into the powderkeg fixture top of the table after Saturday's 4-1 demolition of Alloa co-incided with Brechin's first defeat of the campaign.

It's position manager John McGlynn hopes to retain until May 9.
"We go to Methil as the team at the top of the league and we have to rise to that challenge," he told SportsPress.

"East Fife would love to knock us off that top spot, but that's a challenge we're hoping to face between now and the end of the season. We're top and we want to stay there.

"Any derby game is a difficult game but it's the right type of game for us. It's a big derby so we know we can't drop our standards. The motivation side will be easy for us. We know we will have to be at our best.

"Anything bar our best and we could slip up. We're very positive going into the game, looking to extend our winning streak. It'll be a hard game, but we're well up for it."

Rovers season has taken a dramatic upturn since the performances of his three main strikers forced McGlynn into changing to a 4-3-3 to accommodate them all — a situation he is more than satisfied with.

"The strikers seem to have clicked almost automatically and it's down to their movement," he said.

"They are very mobile players and they seem to interact well. They've got an awareness if one player's going short, then the other will go long.

"They are moving across the pitch to help each other out and making themselves available for a pass. They're hard to mark and we're creating chances from it.

"The strikers are key to the whole things but it takes the whole team to function and in two recent games we haven't looked like losing many goals.

"Apart from a couple of great long distance shots, David McGurn has had nothing to do.

"We're looking solid which is a credit to the defence and goalkeeper for their organisation, to the midfielders for working hard, and to the strikers for working back when we don't have the ball."

With the under 19 side also top of their league and scoring goals, McGlynn revealed that Stark's Park is buzzing.

"It's a great place to be," he said. "Everyone's got the feel-good factor that comes with results.

"We have to take that into the next game and continue that through as long as we possibly can."

Rovers have allowed fit again Andy Tod to sign for Forfar on a one-month loan, while defender Todd Lumsden's loan deal at Albion Rovers has been extended to December 6.
