- Kirkcaldy's top young swimmers enjoy success at championships
KIRKCALDY'S best young swimmers are making a splash at regional level.
Ten swimmers from Kirkcaldy club FINS had a successful outing at the final round of the Fife Schools' Championships held at Glenrothes Pool last Tuesday.
The Lang Toun club added a further four Fife School titles to the four they won two weeks previously.
All events were contested over 100m and this was a qualifying event for Brodies Scottish Schools' Championships to be held at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre in Glasgow on January 31, 2009.
Overall FINS had 19 swims, recorded 10 PBs, won their way through to 11 finals, and won a total of nine medals.
Top FINS' swimmer was again Jack Brownlee, 14-15 years boys, Balwearie High School who won both the breaststroke and freestyle events recording PBs in both.
The club's third title was won by Blair Hush, 16 and over boys, Balwearie High School, who won the butterfly and also won a silver medal in the backstroke.
Another title went to Balwearie High School as pupil Luke Stevenson, 14-15 boys, won the backstroke.
Swimmers who just missed out on titles included Sarah Chapman, 16 and over girls, Balwearie High School, who won two silver medals for the breaststroke and butterfly and Greg Watson, 12-13 boys, Balwearie High School, who had an excellent swim in the freestyle to take the silver medal with a 2.43 second PB.
Greg also just missed out on another medal finishing fourth in the breaststroke. Tammi Warrender, 16 and over girls, Buckhaven High School, also came close to gold, winning silver in the backstroke.
The two largest PBs of the day were not quite enough to see two unlucky swimmers make the finals.
These were Kieran Pate, 12-13 boys, Lochgelly High School, who finished seventh in the backstroke recording a 4.67 second PB, and Robbie Glachan, 14-15 boys, Balwearie High School, who also finished seventh in the backstroke in his age group recording a 2.53 second PB.
The other FINS' swimmers were Emma Eldridge, 12-13 girls, Balwearie High School and Bryonie Plimmer, 12-13 girls, Balwearie High School.
