- Rovers bid for seventh consecutive league win
THE MATCH of the day takes place at Stark's Park on Saturday as Raith Rovers and Brechin City battle for top spot in the Second Division.
With both sides locked on 31 points having lost just once in 14 games, the game gives both teams the chance to edge ahead in what is shaping up to one of the closest title fights in years.
Rovers are on a stunning run of form — they are going for seven consecutive league wins for the first time since 1992 — and the club hope that fans will turn out in force and provide vital backing.
Manager John McGlynn believes his team will use their only defeat of the season, which Brechin inflicted at Glebe Park in September, as motivation for the big game.
"There's a wee niggle in the dressing room that we let ourselves down in one game this season, and that was at Brechin," he told SportsPress. "It's very much at the top of our minds and we want to rectify that by putting on a performance on Saturday.
"We're looking to put on a much better performance than the last time and continue our winning run. Our home form has been very good and we're looking to maintain that also, although Brechin will have a lot to say about that.
"They set a great pace but we've managed to catch them and edge ahead on goal difference. We've consolidated our position at the top over the last few weeks, now comes the crunch.
"It's a top of the table clash so you wouldn't expect there to be much in it."
McGlynn also stressed that the match is too early in the season to be classed as a potential title-decider. "The league won't be won on November 22, it never has been and never will be," he said.
"After Saturday there's 20 games to go, and a lot can happen in 20 games."
Confidence will not be an issue for a Rovers side that has the best goal difference in Scotland outside the Old Firm.
"The players performances have been absolutely terrific," McGlynn added. "14 league games and only one defeat is really good going.
Winning is a great habit to get into. There comes added pressure with that, but so far we've handled all the tests.
"Now we come to this hurdle, but our form is really good, and there's a desire to keep this run going.
"We have to stay mentally and physically strong and continue to keep playing the manner we are. We have to push home our superiority, gain a gap, and break the hearts of the others."
McGlynn has had horrendous luck with injuries in his spell as Rovers manager, but aside from long term absentee Steven Hislop, Rovers have a full squad to choose from.
"It's great to go in prior to the game and say, 'same again'," he said. "David McGurn had gastro-entiritis for the East Fife game and Gary O'Connor went in and picked himself for the next game with his performance.
"But the outfield team has been the same now for a few games, and it hasn't been very often that we've been able to do that. It's no co-incide that now we've got our strongest squad together we're getting our best results. Hopefully we can continue to have a full strength team available."
McGlynn shrugged off the suggestion that his side are benefitting from refereeing decisions having been awarded six penalties in their last five home games.
"I don't think there's anything in it other than the fact we're putting pressure on our opponents and they're cracking," he said. "They're having to commit fouls in the box which lead to penalties.
"Unfortunately for the Peterhead lad on Saturday he's tried to protect himself with his arms, but he's stopped the ball from going towards the goal so the decision was correct."
When asked whether the Stark's Park crowd may be influencing officials, McGlynn replied: "I've heard loud roars for penalty kicks on many occasions, particularly last season, and we hardly got any.
"Maybe the ones we never got last year and evening themselves out this year."
