TAYPORT will be hoping to maintain their cup form when they contest the final of the DJ Laing League Cup at Carnoustie tonight (Friday).

The level of opposition goes up a notch, however, as, to lift the trophy, 'Port will have to find a way to defeat Lochee United at Laing Park.

The Bluebells have held the upper hand over the Canniepairt outfit in recent seasons and they are edging ever closer to joining 'Port and Linlithgow as two-time East Super League champions.

They are, undoubtedly, a strong team and in the likes of Callum Hardie, Craig Robertson and former 'Port star Gary Middleton, they have plenty of attacking players who have caused Tayport problems in recent meetings.

The sides actually met in the League Cup final last year, with the Lochee winning 3-1.

An own goal from Roberto Morris and one each for Middleton and Steven Leahy counted for the Bluebells, with Ronnie Kenneth netting for Tayport.

Frank Conway will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that outcome, but the omens are not good.

The rest of the tournament has echoed last year's event to a somewhat tedious degree.

Tayport faced the same four teams in the sectional matches, back in August, then defeated Montrose Roselea in the semi-finals.

The only difference from the 2006-07 campaign was the abolition of the quarter-finals.

That the last-four clash against Montrose took place in August, seven and a half months ago, perhaps further detracts from the prestige of the competition, but that will not be a concern to Tayport, who will simply relish the opportunity to add silverware to the trophy cabinet.

Tonight's final kicks off at 6.45 p.m., and if level after 90 minutes, penalty kicks will decide which team lifts the League Cup.

Following the League Cup final, the next match will be on the Canniepairt on Wednesday evening.

Carnoustie Panmure will be the visitors, for an East Super League clash.

Points will be up for grabs again on Saturday, April 26, when 'Port host Oakley United, then, on Wednesday, April 30, a third successive match on the Canniepairt, with Thornton Hibs the visitors for a Redwood Leisure Cup tie.
