IT MAY have taken the club 12 years to win its first piece of silverware since being formed back in 1947, but Tayport FC certainly made up for the less than auspicious start with a record breaking haul of silverware following the decision to turn junior in 1990.

To celebrate these achievements, and to commemorate those who have played their part, the club is to host a Hall of Fame night in the Hilton Hotel, Dundee, on Saturday, August 29.

Secretary Abby Oswald said: "It's exactly 50 years since we won o
ur first trophy, the Midlands Bremner Cup, beating Morgan FP in the 1958-59 final, thus becoming the first side from outside the top division to win the association's premier trophy.

"It's also 25 years since the club held its first reunion dinner, back in 1984, two years before the club would play in the semi-final of the Scottish Amateur Cup at Dens Park.

"Many hundreds of players have turned out for the club over the years, playing in the Midlands AFA, the East Fife AFA, the Kingdom Caledonian FA, the Tayside Junior FA and now the East Region FA.

"These 50 years have left many guys filled with indelible memories of a fun-filled time in their lives.

"It's an association which had forged many life-long friendships and seen many a story recalled over a beer or three.

"Of course, there have have been many great players and great characters who have pulled on a Tayport jersey as the club progressed from changing in a gas lit wooden hut on the East Common Esplanade to lifting the Scottish Junior Cup for a third time in from of 7000 fans and a nationwide television audience at Tannadice in 2005."

Tayport's commercial manager John Brown hopes that as many former players, committee, and supporters will come along to the first inaugurations.

It promises it to be a spectacular night, and Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith also headlines the event as the main speaker.

"This is about celebrating what an has been achieved in such short period of time by a very unique, and now almost legendary club," said John.

"We're looking to preserve these memories and recognise players contributions towards the club's history.

"The creation of the Hall of Fame will allow this, and it's something we hope to make an annual event.

"The awards will be selected from the amateur days of post 1990, and the mega successful junior days to the present day.

"In addition, there will also be a heritage award, and an award for outstanding achievement."

Tickets can be obtained from John by calling 07725 850915 or e-mailing john@tayportfc.org, or from any of the committee.
