Kirkcaldy ice-hockey starlet Beth Scoon (18) has been named as assistant captain of GB Universities Women’s team as they head off this weekend to the World Student Winter Games in Trentino, Italy.
Team GB face an extremely tough schedule facing Japan (December 10), USA (12), Canada (13), Spain (15) and Russia (16).
Beth told the Press that she expected the tournament to provide her with the “highest level of competition” she’s ever played at.
She said: “World Championships are seeded by world ranking but we are right in with the big-dogs here and they will all be very strong teams, but you can only improve by pushing yourself and playing against the best.
“I am absolutely delighted to have been made assistant captain of the team in my rookie season. It was a bit of a surprise.
“With it being the Winter Universiade it will be nice to mix with the other winter sports athletes; normally it is just a hockey tournament with hockey players.
“All the skiers, snowboarders, curlers and skaters will travel together and we hope to go and see some other events on days when we do not have games ourselves.
“We are way up in the Dolomites so it should be nice and snowy and a great lead up to Christmas.”
Beth is in her first year at university studying sports and exercise science with sports injuries at Edinburgh Napier University.
In addition to her club commitments with Fife Falcons and Kingston Diamonds, she has been playing with the Edinburgh Eagles, a mixed Edinburgh universities team in the BUIHA Division 1.
“I would like to thank Edinburgh Napier University for awarding me a sports grant and Sainsbury’s in Kirkcaldy for allowing me to do a fundraising bag pack,” added Beth.
“The trip is entirely self-funded so this has been vital.”
