CUPAR teenager Rachel White has been selected to compete for Scotland in the Commonwealth judo tournament which takes place in Cardiff from January 24-26.
The 16-year-old, who trains with the Sportif Judo club in Cupar and St Andrews, cruised to victory in the junior Scottish trials in Kilmarnock, and took a very respectable second place in the senior event.
Rachel, who has also just gained her black belt, said: “I’m thrilled that I am getting to compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth tournament next month.
“I’ll do my best to bring back a medal for Scotland.
“I’m also really pleased to have achieved my black belt at the age of just 16.”
Rachel took up judo at the club in Cupar when it opened in 2005.
She has worked hard to become one of the best young judo players in the country, and is a member of the JudoScotland talent development performance squad.
Rachel’s coach at the club, former Olympian John Buchanan, said: “I’m glad that Rachel’s hard work and effort is finally paying off for her.
“I’m also pleased for her parents, Neil and Lynne, who have been very committed in supporting Rachel traveling to events the length and breadth of the country and abroad.
“Rachel is a great role model for the youngsters at the club and continues to prove that if you work hard enough you can achieve your goals.”
