David’s ski dream comes true

A DREAM has come true for 11-year-old David Christey from Falkland who has been selected for the British children’s ski team.

David started skiing at the age of three in the tiny French resort of Oz en Oisans, where his family had bought a small holiday apartment.

For the next four years he spent most holidays skiing, but had no lessons.

Keeping up with brothers and cousins meant that speed, skiing as fast as possible at all times, was his only consideration, earning his nickname ‘The Kamikaze Scot’ from local French ski instructors.

David’s introduction to ski racing was in Scotland, just before his eighth birthday, with Gordon Polly at the Muckhart and District Snowsport Club in Tillicoultry.

He continues to train every Thursday with MAD during the summer months.

In 2009, David was invited to join the local French race club in Oz en Oisans – an opportunity almost “too good to be true” for an aspiring young ski racer, which David, with support from Falkland Primary School, has made the most of since.

This year, with additional training from the British Ski Academy in Les Houches and sponsorship from Rossignol, David’s ski season culminated in the Scottish and British Championships in France, where he achieved the results that have earned him his place in the GB team.
