Fife has always been a hotbed for stock car racing talent and one of the region’s up and coming young drivers is tipped for a bright future in the sport.
Euan Mathieson began his career, like so many before him, in the junior ministox class, from which he graduated last summer when he turned 16.
Euan moved straight into the all-action 1300 stock cars and has been an ever-present at his home town track, the HRP Lochgelly Raceway, ever since.
For someone who is just starting in the formula he has also travelled extensively, racing as far north as Aberdeenshire and as far south as Kings Lynn in the first few months of his senior racing career.
“I first got into stock cars when my granddad took me to Cowdenbeath a few years ago now before Lochgelly Raceway even opened,” Euan explained.
“I liked what I saw and, when I went back the next week, the ministox were on and that’s when I said that I would like to race.
“My first race meeting was back in 2010. I was very nervous because there was a field of around 20 ministox.
“I started at the back, and I did get lapped a few times, but within a month I had progressed to a red roof (denoting star-graded drivers).
“From there I dropped a roof grade to blue and sat there for the rest of the year and picked up a few seconds and thirds.”
“I now race a 1300 saloon stock car which was always the plan.
“I intend to race the 1300s for a couple of years then move up to the two-litre national saloons.
“I would also like to have a shot in Bangers at some point in the future.”
The World Championship for 1300 stock cars is being held at HRP Lochgelly Raceway this year and Euan hopes to make an impact.
“I hope to qualify for the world final this year and, with a bit of luck in the draw and chaos in the race, I hope to finish as far up the leader board as possible,” he said.
“All of the top drivers will be there on the day and it should be an amazing weekend of racing. I can only try my best, but gold would be very nice!”
Euan lives within a stone’s throw of HRP Lochgelly Raceway, and he has developed an affinity for the track.
“I am very lucky to stay so close,” he said. “It is the best track that I have raced on and is a proper stock car track.
“The facilities are first class and the HRP team work hard to produce a good show for the drivers and spectators.
“It’s a great day out for all the family and, with some big race meetings this year, it should be a great season.”
Euan’s first race meeting of 2014 will be at HRP Lochgelly Raceway on Sunday, March 2, where he will be racing his 1300 stock car.
The stock rods, 2.0 hot rods and ministox will also be in action. The event gets underway at 2.00 p.m with prices £10 for adults.
