Flyers netminder shortlisted for league award

Fife Flyers’ netminder Shane Owen could finish the season with another honour.

He has been shortlisted for the Elite League’s awards which will be revealed during the finals weekend.

Shane is one of just two players from the Gardiner Conference to make the shortlist across any of the six categories.

The awards are dominated by Cardiff Devils, Belfast Giants and Sheffield Steelers, with no nominees at all from Nottingham Panthers, who enjoyed European success but floundered on the domestic front, or Braehead Clan who were crowned Gardiner conference champions.

Owen is one of three listed for netminder of the year, along with Ben Bowns (Cardiff) and Ervins Mustokovs from Sheffield.

The Fife shot-stopper was widely regarded as one of the very best in the league, and last weekend received the Fife Free Press’ Mirror of Merit trophy – the traditional ‘player of the year’ award for the club which dates back to the 1950s.

The award winners will be revealed after Sunday’s third-fourth place play-off match.

The full shortlist is:

Forward of the year: Joey Martin (Cardiff Devils); Vinny Scarsella (Dundee Stars); Mathieu Roy (Sheffield Steelers)

Defenceman of the Year: Andrew Hotham (Cardiff Devils); Jim Vandermeer, Derrick Walser (both Belfast Giants).

Goaltender of the Year: Ben Bowns (Cardiff Devils); Shane Owen (Fife Flyers); Ervins Mustukovs (Sheffield Steelers).

British Player of the Year: Colin Shields (Belfast Giants); Mark Richardson (Cardiff Devils); Ben O’Connor (Sheffield Steelers).

Coach of the Year: Andrew Lord (Cardiff Devils); Derrick Walser (Belfast Giants); Paul Thompson (Sheffield Steelers).

Player of the Year: Andrew Hotham (Cardiff Devils); Vinny Scarsella (Dundee Stars); Mathieu Roy (Sheffield Steelers)
